The telecom industry is in a constant evolution in the last years. The mobile phone industry, especially, has undergone a considerable change in the recent three decades. Thanks to the development of the new technologies, during its existence the mobile phone has satisfi­ed the needs of the users. It has evolved in shape, weight, technology and usability, off‑ering a major comfort and better communication and facilities to the users and becoming a common and essential device for the everyday life of the humanity.

However, there are many problems in the life cycle of the mobile phones and people are not aware of them. The evolution of the technology and the rise of consumption of these devices has made that the average time of use of them has decreased, leading to change mobile phones more often, which means producing more waste and bad repercussion through the environment. In addition, for a cheaper and quicker production of the devices, during the fi­rst stages of the life cycle of the mobile phones there are many social problems that people ignore and should be known and denounced.

Analysis of the life cycle of the mobile phones

Taking into account all these characteristics, it has been decided to create a sustainable solution within this topic using it as main subject for my graduation project of the Master Degree on Ecodesign in Turin. In this thesis have been linked and analyzed in depth the concepts and the existing problems of mobile phones and sustainability and it has been decided to create a project with two main objectives. On one hand, it aims to inform the users about the existing problems behind the mobile phone industry and its life cycle. On the other hand, it will be a mobile phone collecting campaign that will be a competition between di‑erent schools and apart from collecting devices, aims to educate in a sustainable way the future generations.

The topic of the thesis was born from the participation on the "Our Mobile Generation" project that the organization Enviu-Innovators in Sustainability(Rotterdam) is developing.
